Nipomo Man Arrested after Fatal DUI Avila Beach Accident at San Luis Bay Drive and Apple Orchard Lane
Avila Beach, California (August 7, 2021) – A 31-year-old Nipomo man was arrested on DUI charges following a traffic crash that killed a 72-year-old man from Atascadero in Avila Beach Friday afternoon, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The wreck happened shortly before 3:00 p.m. August 6, near San Luis Bay Drive and Apple Orchard Lane.
CHP said the Atascadero man was driving a Mercedes van north on San Luis Bay Drive with his wife in the passenger seat. A southbound Ford F-250 truck driven by the Nipomo man drifted into the path of oncoming traffic at a curve and collided head-on with the van.
Nipomo Man Arrested after Deadly DUI Avila Beach Crash
The driver of the van died at the scene. His wife sustained major injuries and was rushed to Sierra Vista Medical Hospital.
Authorities said the driver of the Ford was under the influence of drugs at the time of the accident. He was arrested on murder charges and booked into the San Luis Obispo County Jail.
The collision is under investigation.
