Midway District, California (May 11, 2022) – Edgar Suarez Espinosa, 33, was arrested on suspicion of DUI after a crash that left two people dead in the Midway District area on Saturday night, according to the authorities.

The incident happened on Rosecrans Street and Sports Arena Boulevard just after 9 p.m. on May 7.

According to the authorities, Espinosa was driving a 1999 Toyota Tacoma at a high rate of speed westbound on Sports Arena Boulevard when he collided with a center median.

The impact sent the Toyota airborne, and it landed on top of a 2015 Toyota Sienna that had been traveling northbound on Rosecrans Street and was stopped at a red light at the intersection.

The crash killed two passengers in the Sienna. The victims have been identified as Suad Alsamarai, 81, and Ahmed Mazin Salah Alrawi, 23, both of El Cajon.

Espinosa suffered major injuries, while the 21-year-old driver of the minivan and their 46-year-old passenger were seriously injured.

The patients were taken to a hospital for treatment.

Espinosa was later arrested and booked into a San Diego County jail on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter, DUI, and driving without a license. 

An investigation into the deadly collision is ongoing.
