16-Year-Old Boy Dies, 2 Others Hospitalized After Suspected DUI Crash on U.S. 60 and Gilbert Road
Mesa, Arizona (November 16, 2022) – A 16-year-old boy died, and two others, including a DUI suspect, were hospitalized after a multi-vehicle collision that happened Sunday morning in Mesa, as per a local news source.
The pileup took place at about 9:30 a.m. near the U.S. 60 off-ramp and Gilbert Road.
According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, a 21-year-old man was driving a black SUV when he crashed into five vehicles stopped at a red light near the intersection.
The SUV caught fire, spreading flames to the other vehicles.
Firefighters rushed to the scene and doused the flames, then pulled the male driver and his 16-year-old passenger from the SUV.
Both were rushed to a hospital, where the teen died of his injuries. The driver remained hospitalized with life-threatening injuries.
A passenger from one of the other vehicles was also hospitalized with serious injuries. The occupants of the other cars suffered minor injuries.
Authorities said they are investigating intoxication as a factor that contributed to the accident, and criminal charges are pending lab results.
