Statistics show that school buses are the safest mode of transport for school going children. There are however instances where a child can be injured when getting into, riding or alighting from a school bus. According to the department of health, approximately 23.5 million children in the US ride buses and nearly 17,000 of them get hurt every year in the process of riding on the buses, getting into or alighting.
Approximately 42 percent of those injured were involved in a bus collision. 24 percent of children were injured in the process of getting into or off of a bus.
43% of children hurt were aged between 11 and 14 while those aged between 5 and 9 sustained the highest number of injuries. Most of the children hurt in bus accidents had head injuries.
Bus drivers in California have a higher duty of care to their passengers compared to other drivers, and most importantly school bus drivers. Failure to observe care, the bus driver may be held liable for injuries caused to the children involved.
