Oceanside, California (February 24, 2023) – Nick Cardenas, 23, was critically injured in a suspected DUI accident that took place in Oceanside on Monday evening, according to a local news source.

The wreck happened on State Route 76 near Benet Road at around 6 p.m. on February 20.

Authorities said Cardenas was riding a motorcycle when a driver ran a redlight in the area and collided with him.

Cardenas was ejected from his motorcycle following the impact of the crash.

He was rushed to a hospital with critical injuries including broken bones and brain trauma.

The other driver, later identified as Robert Shuey, 67, of San Clemente, was treated for his injuries and after being medically cleared, he was booked into jail on suspicion of DUI.

Authorities said Shuey was found dead in his jail cell the following day. Further details on the incident were not immediately available.

Authorities are investigating the incident.
