Morena, CA – A pedestrian walking on a highway was struck and killed by a vehicle early Thursday morning in Morena, according to the California Highway Patrol.
At about 4 a.m., authorities responded to calls of an auto-pedestrian crash at 4850 Pacific Highway.
A preliminary investigation revealed that a 35-year-old man was walking on northbound Pacific Highway as a northbound 2004 Honda Civic was approaching the area. The driver spotted the pedestrian and attempted to swerve to the right to avoid him.
However, the Honda hit the pedestrian and slammed into a parked Toyota Prius on the east curb.
The pedestrian was rushed to a hospital, where he was declared deceased. The driver of the Honda, a 30-year-old woman, remained at the scene and was not suspected of DUI. The accident is under investigation by the California Highway Patrol.
Drivers are required by law to exercise due care to avoid collisions with pedestrians. Pedestrians walking in marked and unmarked crosswalks at intersections have the right of way. Furthermore, pedestrians attempting to cross outside of the crosswalks must yield to vehicle to avoid being hit. Pedestrians should also walk facing traffic when walking on a roadway that lacks a sidewalk. These laws are put into consideration when determining fault and liability in cases of pedestrian accidents.
