Kyle Nelson Arrested after Gaviota Crash on Highway 1 near Highway 101
Gaviota, California (October 29, 2022) – Kyle Nelson, 22, of Goleta, was arrested after a head-on collision that happened early Friday morning near Gaviota, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The wreck happened on Highway 1 nearly one mile west of Highway 101 just after 4 a.m. October 28.
CHP said Nelson was driving a Ford C-Max southbound on Highway 1 when he tried to overtake slower moving traffic and drifted across the double yellow lines. The Ford collided with an oncoming Chevy Malibu.
Both vehicles rotated and burst into flames following the accident.
Firefighters responded to the scene and extinguished the flames.
The two occupants of the Malibu, Jenna Causby, 19, and Dorothyann Guthrie, 20, both of Lompoc, were killed in the crash.
Authorities arrested Nelson on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.
Highway 1 was shut down in both directions as authorities investigated the collision.
The California Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.
