Karl Ortiz Killed in Wrong-Way Car Accident on State Route 18 near 312th Street in Auburn
Auburn, Washington (May 12, 2023) – A 27-year-old man was killed in a car crash late Thursday night in Auburn.
The fatal collision was reported just before midnight on State Route 18 near 312th Street, according to the Washington State Patrol.
A 38-year-old man from Bellevue was driving a 2017 Mazda CX-3 westbound in the eastbound lanes of the highway and collided head-on with a 2019 Chevy Equinox UT driven by 27-year-old Karl Ortiz.
Ortiz, a resident of Gig Harbor, was pronounced dead at the accident scene.
The driver of the Mazda was taken to the hospital for treatment before being taken into custody for vehicular manslaughter and DUI.
The collision resulted in the closure of the eastbound lanes of the highway for about four hours.
More details about the accident were not released.
An investigation into the crash is ongoing.
