Gonzalo Martinez III Killed in Car Accident on Highway 60 in Columbia County
Columbia County, Oregon (February 21, 2023) – A National Guardsman died after being struck by a car on Sunday evening in Columbia County.
The fatal crash happened at around 6:23 p.m. on Highway 60 near milepost 60, according to the Oregon State Police.
The police say two National Guardsmen, including 29-year-old Gonzalo Martinez III, of Cleveland TX, were part of a military convoy traveling westbound on the highway when they encountered car trouble.
The two pulled over and exited the Hummer where Martinez was struck by a passing 1997 Chevrolet pickup. The Chevrolet then crashed into the Hummer.
Martinez and the Chevrolet driver were injured in the crash and were transported to an area hospital where Martinez was pronounced dead.
Additional information about the accident was not provided.
An investigation into the accident is underway.
