Riding at night can be more dangerous compared to the daytime simply because of the limited visibility. Riders need to ensure they are visible to other motorists and road users while at the same time be able to see any other objects in their surrounding. Crashes can be caused by negligent riders while others can be caused by other negligent motorists.
DUI drivers are most likely to be involved in accidents at night. Statistics show that most crashes caused by DUI drivers occur between 9 p.m. and 3 a.m. Riders need to stay alert always and be able to avoid impacts with drunk drivers.
There are obstacles on the roadways that could have fallen from other vehicles, debris from earlier crashes, potholes, manholes, loose gravel e.t.c. It can get tricky for motorcyclists to navigate through such obstacles especially at night when there is limited vision.
Animals and drunk pedestrians also pose risks for riders at night. Riders should be on the lookout for animals by use of the animals’ glowing eyes and ensure torch lights are working well to be able to spot such obstacles on the roadways.
Riders could avoid many of the crashes by increasing their visibility. Reflective clothing, reflective tape and decals, flashlights, modulators and high beams assist increase visibility for motorcyclists.
