Brief Police Chase Ends in Crash on 10 Freeway

Los Angeles, California (May 10, 2023) – At least one person was hospitalized after a suspect being pursued by police caused a multi-vehicle collision on the Santa Monica (10) Freeway in the Jefferson Park area of downtown Los Angeles, authorities said.

The pileup took place at around 2:36 p.m. in the westbound lanes at Arlington Avenue, shortly after the chase began at 2:32 p.m.

Authorities said a police task force was searching for suspected jewelry store robbers in downtown LA when they were informed about a report of a stolen car near 8th and Olive streets.

An officer attempted to pull the vehicle, but the driver took off, prompting a brief police chase.

The suspect drove westbound on the 10 Freeway, and as the car approached the Arlington Avenue underpass, the driver made a sharp right turn as if they were trying to exit. The car collided with at least three other cars.

The suspect driver was arrested on suspicion of stealing a vehicle. Paramedics treated the driver at the scene for unknown injuries. A gun was also found in the vehicle.

At least one other person was hospitalized in stable condition.

Police shut down all westbound lanes of the freeway during an investigation.
