Bakersfield, CA. – The Kern County Coroner's Office has identified 34-year-old Adrien Matthiew Andino of Bakersfield as the pedestrian who was struck and killed by a vehicle in south Bakersfield on Nov. 25.
Officials said Andino was crossing South H Street near Wilson Road outside a crosswalk at around 10:25 p.m. when he was hit by the vehicle.
He died at the scene.
The male driver remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities.
According to the Bakersfield Police Department, both speed and impairment are being investigated as contributing factors in the fatal crash.
In 2024, Bakersfield made progress in reducing fatal collisions, but saw an increase in injury-related crashes, indicating persistent road safety challenges. The total number of fatal collisions dropped to 44 in 2024, down from 53 in 2023 and 69 in 2022. This decline included a significant 58% decrease in fatal crashes involving impaired drivers. However, non-fatal collisions increased, with 1,813 total non-fatal collisions in 2024, up from 1,784 the previous year. Despite the slight improvement in overall fatalities, pedestrian safety remains a critical concern, with Bakersfield consistently identified as one of the most dangerous cities in the state and nation for people on foot. Between 2018 and 2022, the city recorded 181 pedestrian fatalities, a 19.9% increase over the prior five-year period. In 2024 alone, 17 of the 44 fatal collisions involved a pedestrian. Most pedestrian incidents occur at night, often between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m., in areas like downtown and east Bakersfield.
