Authorities Investigating Deadly Santa Paula Crash Caused by Deer

Santa Paula, California (May 22, 2023) – The California Highway Patrol said one person was killed, and another was trapped inside their car after a traffic collision that happened Monday morning in Santa Paula.

The wreck, which occurred at around 5:38 a.m. near the 11600 block of Telegraph Road east of North Wells Road, may have been caused by a deer in the roadway.

A white Ford Explorer, a gray Nissan, and a deer were involved.

One person was trapped inside one of the vehicles.

CHP officers who responded to the scene said the driver of one vehicle may have swerved to avoid the deer in the roadway and ended up colliding with the second car.

The officers said one person died in the crash, and another suffered unspecified injuries.

A dead deer was located at the scene.

The Animal Control Unit was initially requested to respond and take the carcass, but the firefighters picked it up.

Telegraph Road remained closed in both directions during the investigation.
