Authorities Identify Man Killed in 12-Vehicle Collision on Highway 12 in Santa Rosa

Santa Rosa, CA. – 78-year-old Charles Patrick La Fortune of was killed in a multi-vehicle accident that happened last month on in Santa Rosa, the County Sheriff-Coroner's Office said.

The 12-vehicle collision was reported around 11:52 a.m. on August 29 in the westbound lanes of the highway at Fulton Road.

According to the California Highway Patrol and the Santa Rosa Fire Department, motorists heading westbound on the highway were stopped at the Fulton Road intersection when a dump truck rear-ended them.

La Fortune's Toyota Tacoma pickup truck was the first to be hit by the dump truck. The pickup truck was pushed into multiple vehicles stopped ahead of it, causing it to catch fire and become fully engulfed in flames.

La Fortune died in the accident. He was the only occupant of the pickup truck.

Eight people from the other vehicles involved were taken to local hospitals with minor to serious injuries. Their injuries were not considered life-threatening.

Investigators did not immediately determine why the dump truck crashed into stopped traffic.

An investigation into the accident is ongoing.

The crash took place on Highway 12 near Fulton Road at around noon.
