Man on Wheelchair Dies 9 Days After Being Hit on Kern Canyon Road

Bakersfield, Calif. – A 66-year-old Bakersfield man who was seriously injured after his wheelchair was struck by a car on Kern Canyon Road on November 2 is dead, according to a police report.

Reportedly, the man succumbed to his shortly before noon on Saturday, November 11 at Kern Medical.

CHP officials say the victim was struck at 6:13 p.m. November 2, by a 2015 Nissan. The man was in a wheelchair crossing northbound Kern Canyon Road just west of Shalane Avenue outside of a marked crosswalk.

The man, whose name has not been released, was ejected from his wheelchair. He was rushed to Kern Medical with major injuries where he remained hospitalized until Saturday.

The driver of the Nissan, Gustavo Gabriel Lopez, 19, Bakersfield, was not injured in the crash.

An investigation into the incident is underway.
