Original story

Chino Hills, CA. – Two Caltrans contract workers died after they were hit by an out-of-control box truck as they were doing cleanup Monday morning along State Route 71 in Chino Hills.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash happened at around 8:39 a.m. at an embankment below northbound State Route 71 just past Euclid Avenue.

A crew of about a dozen workers contracted by Caltrans was doing cleanup in the area as part of the governor's Clean California initiative.

A white Ford van the workers arrived in was parked on the right shoulder when a white box truck sideswiped the van and lost control, going down the hill, where it crashed into two of the Caltrans workers.

One of the two workers died at the scene.

The second victim was taken to a hospital where they later died.

The box truck driver cooperated with officers. Alcohol was not considered a contributing factor.

CHP officers shut down at least two lanes of the highway during an investigation.
