San Diego, CA – A San Diego police officer is dead, and another is hospitalized in critical condition after a high-speed pursuit suspect crashed into their vehicle at an intersection late Monday night, according to the San Diego Police Department. The suspect was also killed in the incident.
According to SPD, the deadly collision was reported at about 11:30 p.m. on August 26 near the intersection of Doliva Drive and Clairemont Mesa Boulevard, just west of 805 Freeway.
Reportedly, officers attempted to stop a vehicle that was traveling at a high rate of speed on Clairemont Mesa Boulevard, but the driver failed to yield. Due to the high rate of speed, the supervising officer called off the pursuit, authorities said.
Two other officers in a police car were responding to the reports of the fleeing vehicle when the suspect crashed into the side of the police vehicle at a high rate of speed.
Authorities said the officer who was driving the police vehicle and the suspect were pronounced dead at the scene. The second police officer was critically injured in the incident.
No additional information regarding the accident was provided.
The California Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.
