Francisco Ruiz Coronado Among 2 Killed in Crash on I-17 in Phoenix

, AZ – Francisco J. Ruiz , 28, was among two people who died in a in Phoenix early Sunday morning.

According to the Phoenix Police Department , the wreck took place on near Nothern Avenue at about 1 a.m. July 7.

Troopers were reportedly investigating a possible DUI driver who had stopped in the northbound lanes of I-17 when a Kia Optima and a Hyundai Sonata collided in the backup.

The drivers of both vehicles and a passenger in the Kia went outside to assess the damage to the vehicles.

As the three were standing next to their vehicles, a black Ford Mustang traveling at a high rate of speed crashed into the vehicles and the three pedestrians.

The driver of the Hyundai, identified as Ruiz Coronado, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The driver of the Kia, a 17-year-old boy, was taken to a hospital, where he later died.

Two people were inside the Kia when it was hit by the Ford.

All three Kia passengers were treated for minor injuries.
The driver of the Ford attempted to flee the scene after the accident but was caught and arrested.

The suspect, identified as Michael Gibson, 28, was charged with reckless manslaughter, endangerment and assault.

One passenger in the Ford left the scene after the crash but two others remained and were treated for their injuries.

The accident is under investigation.
