Xiangping Zhang Injured in Deadly US 101 Collision in Del Norte County

Del Norte County, California (August 7, 2021) – Xiangping Zhang, 56, of Irvine was injured in a deadly collision that happened in Del Norte County on Friday afternoon, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The wreck happened at around 1:45 p.m. August 6, on US 101, north of mile marker 10.8.

CHP said a 66-year-old McKinleyville man was driving a 1997 Ford Explorer northbound on the highway when, for unknown reasons, he drifted across the double yellow lines and collided head-on with an oncoming 2017 Acura MDX driven by Zhang.

The driver of the Ford died at the scene of the collision. His name was not immediately released.

Zhang and one of his passengers, Edward Zhang, 12, of Irvine, sustained minor injuries. A second passenger, Ling Yang, 48, also of Irvine, suffered moderate injuries.

The three patients were taken to Sutter Coast Hospital for treatment.

CHP said alcohol and drugs were not suspected to be factors in the collision. The investigation is ongoing.
