1 Killed, 4 Injured in Phoenix Car Crash on Loop 202 South Mountain Freeway

Phoenix, Arizona (May 22, 2023) – One person was killed in a wrong-way car crash that left five other people injured on Sunday afternoon near Ahwatukee in Phoenix.
At around 5 p.m., the Phoenix Fire Department responded to the scene of a multi-vehicle collision on Loop 202 South Mountain Freeway near 24th Street.
Five cars including a vehicle reported to have been traveling the wrong way were involved in the accident. The impact of the collision caused one of the cars to flip onto its side.
A 12-year-old girl, a 9-year-old girl, a 20-year-old woman and another adult were transported to the hospital in critical condition. A 33-year-old man was hospitalized in stable condition.

On Monday morning, the Arizona Department of Public Safety was notified that one person had died. The deceased person was a passenger in the wrong-way crash.
Authorities temporarily closed the eastbound lanes of the freeway as the scene was cleared.
The DPS is investigating the cause of the accident.
